The Forest Deep
Part 10
“And the girl?” asked Yavan.
“No trace,” was the young man’s reply. “I, um… I didn’t find any actual remains. Didn’t look there was any, to be honest.”
“Hmm. Perhaps we would do well to go back so that I might get a good look at all of this.”
“I thought you might think so, sir.”
It was at that moment Medah caught their attention, rushing across the small village proper, one her hand firmly upon a basket at her hip and the other waving at them. Menzo and Yavan both rose to welcome her return but she spared them only a quick greeting and smile before knocking on the door and awaiting access with obvious impatience. Both men remained standing while the healer swept in and the door shut behind her once more. Menzo glanced at Yavan who lifted his pipe to his mouth, chewing slightly at the mouthpiece while he pondered. Then, as the Vigil sat back down, so followed the new Companion in a rushed manner.
For a long moment, they remained thus, in silence, Yavan puffing at his pipe with slitted eyes, barely noticing how Menzo crossed and uncrossed his hands, examining them and fiddling with them.
When no news came by the time his second pipeful was entirely smoked and the pipe fully cooled, Yavan sighed and began preparing it to be put away. This drew Menzo out of his revery and he rubbed his palms against his coarse-looking breeches as he awaited for Yavan to announce his intentions.
Once the Vigil had finally secured his things away neatly, he nodded with assurance and turned to the younger man. “Why don’t you show me this cavern you found, now?”
